This ethnographic print illustrates three figures identified as Oriental Tartars, showcasing distinct roles and attire from Central Asia and China. The scene depicts a seated Tartar man wearing traditional robes, a figure identified as a Lama or Buddhist priest, and a servant, set in a naturalistic outdoor landscape. The illustration serves as a visual record of the physical appearance, clothing, and weaponry of the Tartar population, who were frequently encountered on the fringes of the Chinese Empire. This print was compiled and published  by Abbé Prévost in the encyclopedic work, the Histoire Générale des Voyages, drawing its original visual source material from the 17th-century travels of Johan Nieuhof.

Antoine-François Prévost d'Exiles, known as the Abbé Prévost, was a prominent French author, novelist, and historian of the 18th century, famous for his novel Manon Lescaut. He spent years compiling and editing the encyclopedic Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Voyages). This monumental work, which synthesized travel accounts from around the world, was a major publishing success of the Enlightenment, and Prévost's editorial effort was instrumental in shaping European perceptions of distant cultures and geographies.
