70 John Webber (1751–1793) – A View of the Town and Harbour of St. Peter and St. Paul, in Kamtschatka – Engraving (1784)

This impressive topographical print captures a panoramic view of the harbor and settlement of St. Peter and St. Paul (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky) in Kamtschatka, Russia. The scene, set in the remote northern Pacific, shows the British ships Resolution and Discovery anchored in Avacha Bay. The shore features a mix of Russian log houses and indigenous dwellings, with snow-capped mountains and volcanoes visible in the distance. This print documents the furthest northern reach of the expedition and the contact with the Russian colonial outpost, and it was included as a geographical record in the official British Admiralty-sanctioned account of Captain James Cook's third and final voyage, A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean.
John Webber was an English landscape and portrait artist who served as the official artist on Captain James Cook's third voyage of discovery (1776–1780) aboard HMS Resolution. His official task was to create drawings of the places, scenery, and memorable scenes encountered, providing a meticulous visual record to supplement the written narrative. Upon returning to England, Webber was commissioned by the Admiralty to supervise the engraving and publication of his sketches, which resulted in the comprehensive atlas for the voyage publication.
