71 John Webber (1751–1793) – A View of Snug Corner Cove, in Prince William's Sound – Engraving - Large Folio (1784)

This dramatic topographical print depicts Snug Corner Cove in Prince William's Sound, Alaska, during the exploration of the Pacific Northwest. The scene is dominated by towering, snow-capped mountains and rocky cliffs characteristic of the Alaskan coastline. In the foreground, numerous small canoes manned by local inhabitants surround the ships of the expedition, the Resolution and the Discovery. The engraving captures the desolate but imposing grandeur of the Arctic landscape and the moment of first contact with the indigenous people. This print was included as a geographical record in the official British Admiralty-sanctioned account of Captain James Cook's third and final voyage, A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean.
John Webber was an English landscape and portrait artist who served as the official artist on Captain James Cook's third voyage of discovery (1776–1780) aboard HMS Resolution. His official task was to create drawings of the places, scenery, and memorable scenes encountered, providing a meticulous visual record to supplement the written narrative. Upon returning to England, Webber was commissioned by the Admiralty to supervise the engraving and publication of his sketches, which resulted in the comprehensive atlas for the voyage publication.
