This detailed ornithological illustration depicts two distinct bird species, arranged on separate branches against a plain background. On the left is the Hook-billed Vanga, a striking bird with deep teal, red, and black plumage, shown gripping a branch with its characteristic large beak. On the right is a Spotted Cuckoo species, shown perched and exhibiting a prominent pattern of white spots against darker feathers. This hand-coloured lithograph is a scientific plate from the comprehensive work, Natural History and Illustrations of Birds, which documented and systematized avian species from around the world. The lithograph is notable for its combination of scientific accuracy and aesthetic composition, representing the height of German-Swiss natural history illustration.

Karl Joseph Brodtmann was a Swiss artist, lithographer, and publisher celebrated for his prolific contributions to natural history during the 19th century.
