106 Louis Auguste de Sainson (1800–1877) – Dance of the Vatahasisa – Engraving (Circa 1833)

This print illustrates a dynamic ethnographic scene, the Dance of the Vatahasisa, depicting a group of six indigenous figures performing a ceremonial dance. The composition captures the energy of the performance, focusing on the central female figure with flowing robes and jewelry, flanked by drummers and fellow dancers. The image originates from the large-format atlas accompanying the official account of the French circumnavigation expedition of the corvette L'Astrolabe, which explored the Pacific Islands, Australia, and New Zealand between 1826 and 1829. This work documents the costumes and customs of the native populations encountered during the voyage.
Louis Auguste de Sainson was the official artist and draughtsman aboard the French corvette L'Astrolabe on its three-year circumnavigation under Captain Dumont d'Urville. He meticulously produced nearly 500 drawings during the voyage, documenting landscapes, natural history, and ethnographic scenes. After the expedition, de Sainson played a crucial role in preparing these field sketches for the highly influential Voyage de la corvette L'Astrolabe atlas, where his work was converted into engravings for publication.
