This detailed ethnographic print is divided into two distinct vignettes that illustrate the Population of an island visited during a French naval expedition. The scene on the left depicts an elderly man resting beneath a tropical tree near a simple dwelling, while the right scene shows a woman, viewed from the back and wearing a striped garment, walking toward a small settlement with other figures nearby. This work is part of the extensive ethnographic documentation produced for the official account of the circumnavigation of the corvette L'Astrolabe, an important French scientific expedition that explored various locations across the Pacific Ocean, including the South Seas and Australasia.

Louis Auguste de Sainson was the official artist for the L'Astrolabe expedition led by Dumont d'Urville from 1826 to 1829. His artistic output from the voyage was prodigious, capturing detailed views of indigenous life, settlements, and landscapes. De Sainson was directly involved in transforming his on-site field sketches into the final compositions that were then engraved for the published atlas volumes of the expedition, providing essential visual records of early 19th-century global exploration.
