This striking ethnographic print, titled Guerrier de Juida, depicts a warrior from the region of Juida (Whydah), a coastal area within modern Benin, Africa. The figure is shown dynamically, running across a sparse landscape while holding a large oval shield and a spear, with a sword and quiver visible across his chest. This illustration originates from Encyclopédie des voyages (Encyclopedia of Voyages), a multi-volume French compendium intended to visually document the distinctive dress, weaponry, and appearance of peoples from across the globe in the late 18th century.
Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was a French writer, diplomat, and ethnographic compiler of the Enlightenment period. He is best known for devising and publishing the Encyclopédie des voyages, a monumental work that featured hundreds of plates illustrating the world’s inhabitants.
