This ethnographic print, labeled Femme du Senegal, is a figure study depicting a woman from Senegal, Africa, in ceremonial or daily attire. She is shown adorned with elaborate bead necklaces and wearing a patterned wrapped skirt, holding a basket of produce. The illustration is set against a simple landscape background featuring palms and a distant dwelling. This print originates from Encyclopédie des voyages (Encyclopedia of Voyages), a late 18th-century compendium intended to visually document the distinctive dress, customs, and appearance of peoples from across the globe.

Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was a French writer, diplomat, and ethnographic compiler of the Enlightenment period. He is best known for devising and publishing the Encyclopédie des voyages, a monumental work that featured hundreds of plates illustrating the world’s inhabitants. Although Grasset collaborated with various artists and engravers, including J. D. L'Espinasse and J. L. Laroque, he conceived and directed the entire project, aiming to create a systematic visual record of world cultures.
