This detailed botanical illustration documents two varieties of Rest-harrow (Anonis/Ononis), a leguminous shrub, along with a finely rendered butterfly. The plants are meticulously drawn to show their flowering and seeding stages, featuring the pink blooms of Anonis purpurea spinis carens and the patterned leaves of the spineless variety. The inclusion of the insect on the page serves to complete the natural history study. This print originates from Phytanthoza Iconographia, a monumental four-volume work that sought to document thousands of known botanical species, both indigenous and exotic, in the mid-18th century.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was an influential German pharmacist, apothecary, and botanist. He commissioned Phytanthoza Iconographia, his enduring masterpiece, overseeing the production of over a thousand plates. This work is celebrated in botanical art history for being the first major publication to employ the pioneering technique of color-printed mezzotint, often after original drawings by eminent artists like Georg Dionysius Ehret, lending the finished prints their exceptional depth and tonal quality.
