173 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Spanish Dagger or Mound Lily Yucca (Aloe tuberosa seu Yucca gloriosa major) – Hand-colouring engraving (Circa 1740)

This remarkable botanical illustration documents the exotic plant botanically labeled as Aloe tuberosa seu Yucca gloriosa major, commonly known today as the Spanish Dagger or Mound Lily Yucca. The plant is meticulously detailed, showcasing its cluster of sword-like leaves and central spike of white, bell-shaped flowers, alongside an enlarged detail of a single bloom. The specimen is presented in a highly decorative, classical blue urn, a common motif in this series used to emphasize the high ornamental and collector value of such exotic flora cultivated in 18th-century European gardens and orangeries.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was an influential German pharmacist, apothecary, and botanist. He commissioned Phytanthoza Iconographia, his enduring masterpiece, overseeing the production of over a thousand plates. This work is celebrated in botanical art history for being the first major publication to employ the pioneering technique of color-printed mezzotint, often after original drawings by eminent artists like Georg Dionysius Ehret, lending the finished prints their exceptional depth and tonal quality.
