171 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Cuckoo Pint (Arum vulgare) Varieties and Fruit – Hand-colouring engraving (Circa 1740)

This highly detailed botanical illustration documents various parts and forms of the Cuckoo Pint or Lords and Ladies plant (Arum vulgare), a common European species. The print illustrates the major and minor varieties (Arum vulgare majus and minus), showcasing the spathe, the patterned leaves, and the bright red berries (the fruit). The various elements are scientifically arranged on the page for comparison. This print originates from Phytanthoza Iconographia, a monumental four-volume work that sought to document thousands of known botanical species, both indigenous and exotic, in the mid-18th century.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was an influential German pharmacist, apothecary, and botanist. He commissioned Phytanthoza Iconographia, his enduring masterpiece, overseeing the production of over a thousand plates. This work is celebrated in botanical art history for being the first major publication to employ the pioneering technique of color-printed mezzotint, often after original drawings by eminent artists like Georg Dionysius Ehret, lending the finished prints their exceptional depth and tonal quality.
