This ethnographic print illustrates a ceremony of mourning or communal activity among the indigenous inhabitants of America. The scene, set near a thatched dwelling and a body of water, depicts several figures engaging in a ritual, while an individual stands prominently in the foreground. Published in a German edition of De Bry’s Grands Voyages series, this image contributed significantly to the European visual narrative of the New World, detailing the customs, appearance, and perceived "savage manners" of the native inhabitants.

Theodor de Bry, along with his sons, was a German engraver and publisher, best known for compiling and illustrating the influential collection of travel narratives titled Grands Voyages (The Great Voyages, or America). De Bry’s workshop, operating in Frankfurt, translated and illustrated explorer accounts, creating detailed copperplate engravings that profoundly shaped European understanding of the New World for over a century, despite De Bry never having traveled to the Americas himself.
