44 Theodor de Bry (1528–1598) – Battle Between Indigenous Brazilian Tribes (Tupinamba) – Engraving (Circa 1592)

This dramatic ethnographic print illustrates a violent battle between indigenous groups, most notably the Tupinamba, in Brazil. The scene, set on and around rivers and islands, depicts numerous figures engaged in hand-to-hand combat using bows, arrows, and spears while navigating the water in canoes. The accompanying Latin text details the ferocity and tactics of the Tupinamba and opposing warriors. This engraving is a historical and ethnographic visualization of the conflicts described in early European accounts of South America, specifically in the narrative of Hans Staden.
Theodor de Bry, along with his sons, was a German engraver and publisher, best known for compiling and illustrating the influential collection of travel narratives titled Grands Voyages (The Great Voyages, or America). This print is a plate from Americae Tertia Pars, the third volume, which contained Hans Staden’s account of his captivity among the Tupinamba. De Bry’s work shaped European perceptions of the New World for generations through its detailed, often dramatic, copperplate engravings.
