62 John Harris (fl. 1686–1730) – The Inhabitants of California in their Respective Dress – Copperplate Engraving (Circa 1730)

This ethnographic print, from an 18th-century English geographical volume, illustrates the perceived appearance and customs of the indigenous peoples of California. The plate is divided into four distinct scenes: an Indian Man preparing for hunting or fishing, an Indian Man engaged in fishing with a basket trap, an Indian Woman described as being of distinction (An Indian Woman of Distinction...), and an Indian Woman in ordinary dress. The background features rocky, mountainous landscapes indicative of the region. The image provides an early European visual record, based on initial explorer accounts, of the inhabitants and their material culture in the Spanish territory of Alta California.
John Harris was a British cartographer, draughtsman, and engraver active in London during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He specialized in producing fine architectural and topographical views, as well as maps, for prominent publishers of the time. His works were instrumental in documenting global locations and historical sites as part of the flourishing Age of Exploration and enlightenment, particularly for multi-volume travel compendiums.
