This architectural and topographical print presents an exterior view of the Pyramid of Cestius (Pyramis C. Cestii) in Rome, a well-preserved ancient structure that was integrated into the city's Aurelian Walls. The scene depicts the pyramid and the adjacent Porta San Paolo (Gate of St. Paul), with figures, carts, and military equipment providing a sense of scale and life. This plate is an illustration from Lauro’s major archaeological work, Antiquae Urbis Splendor (The Splendor of the Ancient City), which recorded and celebrated the magnificent monuments and antiquities of the city.

Giacomo Lauro was an Italian engraver, printmaker, and publisher active in Rome from the late 16th century to the mid-17th century. He worked extensively in depicting Roman antiquities and was instrumental in producing illustrative material for visitors and scholars during the Baroque era. His most celebrated work is the Antiquae Urbis Splendor, a compilation of detailed views of Rome’s ancient monuments, ruins, and reconstructions. This work, which was continually expanded and reprinted, established Lauro as a central figure in the visual documentation of Rome's historical landscape.
