63 Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – Een lesse voor nieugehoude – Emblematic Engraving – 17th Century

This emblematic engraving titled Een lesse voor nieugehoude (“A Lesson for the Newly Married”) forms part of Jacob Cats’s emblematic moral literature from Alle de wercken van den heere Jacob Cats. The image depicts two bears embracing anthropomorphically in a domestic setting, while onlookers watch from above. The Latin motto Sævis inter se convenit ursis (“Even savage bears come together”) reinforces the satirical tone of the accompanying Dutch verse, which offers ironic commentary on marital relationships and gender roles. The emblem blends humor and moral instruction in the style that made Cats’s work deeply influential and widely read across the Dutch Republic.
Jacob Cats (1577–1660) was one of the most influential writers and politicians of the Dutch Golden Age. He became famous for his didactic poems and emblem books that promoted moral values, family harmony, and civic virtue. His accessible writing style earned him enduring popularity across generations. In addition to his literary success, Cats served as Grand Pensionary of Holland, acting as a leading statesman in the Dutch Republic. His collected works, often issued in richly illustrated volumes, became household staples and cemented his legacy as a national moralist.
