107 Gaspar Bouttats (c.1640–1695) after Jan Peeters I (1624–1677) – View of Antioch with Caravan and Ruins – Etching (1672)

This original 17th-century etching depicts a panoramic view of the ancient city of Antioch, with its surrounding hills, Roman ruins, and the Cave of Saint Peter. Executed by Flemish engraver Gaspar Bouttats after a drawing by Jan Peeters I, the composition presents a sweeping scene filled with narrative detail: in the foreground, a Turkish caravan with camels refreshes at a fountain, while beyond, one sees a crumbled classical temple and bustling cityscape. Labeled elements in Dutch below the image identify significant landmarks, including the location of Saint Peter’s early Christian gatherings.
This print is part of a series of biblical and historical views published in Antwerp in 1672, reflecting both the religious fascination with early Christian sites and the baroque aesthetic of dramatic architectural and topographical rendering.
