This rare and dramatic engraving, titled Punishment of the Unfaithful Wife of the King of Whydah and Her Lover, vividly portrays the traditional execution ritual that took place in the Kingdom of Whydah (Ouidah), located in present-day Benin. The scene, marked as T. IV. N. XX., captures the public execution, with a large gathering of onlookers observing the ritual. Smoke billows from the ceremonial fire, while the execution is carried out under strict supervision. Palm trees and tropical flora frame the event, emphasizing the distant, exotic nature of the scene to European audiences of the time. The engraving serves as a visual documentation of 18th-century customs in West Africa, interpreted through the lens of European exploration and ethnographic study.

The engraving was part of a series illustrating African rituals and societal structures, contributing to the broader European understanding of West African kingdoms during the Age of Exploration. Published as part of travel accounts and ethnographic studies, it symbolized the European fascination with distant cultures and the dramatic representations of their customs.
