This magnificent engraving, presenting Curia Hostilia and the Temple of Bacchus, was created by Jan van Vianen after the designs of Jan Goeree. It is part of the series published in Beschryving van Oud en Nieuw Rome, written by Francois Desseine and published by Francois Halma in 1704. The composition is divided into two distinct sections: the upper engraving depicts the Curia Hostilia, one of the original Senate houses of the Roman Republic, adorned with allegorical scenes of cherubs and Roman symbols. The lower engraving illustrates the remains of the Temple of Bacchus (Dionysus) in Rome, capturing the grandeur of Roman architecture in its decayed yet majestic form. Decorative elements such as sculptural reliefs and mythological figures add to the Baroque elegance of the piece.

This engraving is part of Beschryving van Oud en Nieuw Rome, a significant work documenting the grandeur of ancient and modern Rome. Published by Francois Halma in 1704, the work is noted for its high-quality engravings and detailed depictions of Roman architecture. The collaboration between Jan Goeree and Jan van Vianen brought forward some of the most intricate architectural studies of the early 18th century.

Jan Goeree (1670–1731) was a Dutch engraver, painter, and poet. Born in Middelburg, he studied art under the guidance of Gerard de Lairesse, a prominent Dutch painter. Goeree became well-known for his architectural engravings, allegorical scenes, and illustrations for scientific and historical publications. His artistic approach blended detailed realism with Baroque ornamentation, making his works highly sought after during his time. In addition to his visual art, Goeree was also an accomplished writer, contributing literary works on history and architecture.
