"The red-spotted Sea Perch". This work depicts a sea perch in lateral profile, characterized by its spiny dorsal fin and numerous small spots covering its body. This etching is a plate from the multi-volume encyclopedia Encyclopaedia Londinensis; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, compiled and published by John Wilkes in London in 1794. The illustration is a scientific representation intended to document the anatomical features and scale patterns of this aquatic species for the educational purposes of the dictionary.

John Wilkes was an English printer, bookseller, and editor based in London who is best known for producing the Encyclopaedia Londinensis. He spent over twenty years compiling this monumental work, which eventually spanned twenty-four volumes and featured thousands of detailed copperplate engravings. Wilkes collaborated with numerous artists and engravers to ensure that the scientific and technical subjects were represented with clarity and precision. His publication was one of the most ambitious and successful encyclopedic projects of the Regency era, contributing significantly to the dissemination of knowledge in Great Britain.
