12788 Eleazar Albin (active 1690-1742) – View of Moths and Caterpillars on Cherry Branches – Hand-coloured etching (1720)

"To the Right Honorable Lady Elizabeth Compton" This plate illustrates the life stages of moths, featuring two caterpillars with distinct markings resting on branches with green leaves and ripe red cherries, along with two adult moths and a central chrysalis. The work is a hand-coloured etching. It was published in A Natural History of English Insects, printed in London for the author. This series was pioneering for its time, providing a visual record of the metamorphosis of native insect species through careful observation and rearing.
Eleazar Albin was a German-born naturalist and professional watercolourist who worked in London. He became well-known for his meticulously detailed illustrations of insects, birds, and spiders, often producing works by subscription for the British aristocracy. His primary contribution to entomology was the documentation of insect life cycles from the larval stage to the adult form. Albin's work is considered a significant early example of the transition toward empirical scientific illustration in natural history.
