12787 Eleazar Albin (active 1690-1742) – View of Moths, Caterpillars, and Chrysalises – Hand-coloured etching (1720)

"To Thomas Cowslad Esqr" This plate illustrates various life stages of moths, including two bristled caterpillars resting on leafy branches, four adult moths with differing wing patterns, and three small chrysalises. The work is a hand-coloured etching. It was published in A Natural History of English Insects, which was printed in London for the author. This publication was one of the earliest to provide detailed, hand-coloured illustrations of the life cycles of insects found in England, documenting their metamorphosis from larvae to adult forms.
Eleazar Albin was a German-born naturalist and professional watercolour painter who settled in London. He established a reputation for his meticulously detailed illustrations of insects and birds, often teaching the art of painting to members of the gentry. His primary contribution to science was the production of several large-scale works that combined artistic beauty with empirical observation. Albin was among the first artists to observe and record the transformation of insects through direct rearing of specimens.
