12782 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741) – View of Various Thistle Species – Hand-coloured etching (1737)
"Carduus spinosissimus, Carduus stellatus" This plate illustrates three distinct species of thistles, showing their spiny foliage and characteristic flower heads in shades of purple and yellow. The technical nature is a hand-coloured etching. It was published in the Phytanthoza Iconographia, a monumental four-volume botanical work printed in Regensburg. This publication was among the first to successfully use a combination of etching and mezzotint to provide high-quality, full-colour botanical illustrations for scientific study.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanist who directed the court pharmacy in Regensburg. He spent much of his career amassing a vast collection of botanical specimens and managing the production of one of the most comprehensive botanical records of the eighteenth century. He collaborated with skilled artists and engravers, such as Georg Dionysius Ehret and the Haid family, to produce over one thousand detailed plates. His work is celebrated for its early technical innovations in colour printing and its significant contribution to the advancement of botanical science.
