12694 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Blattaria lutea quadrifoliata – Hand-coloured engraving (1737)

"Blattaria lutea quadrifoliata" (traditionally associated with Mullein or Loosestrife varieties in early nomenclature) depicts a central botanical stalk with whorled, lanceolate green leaves and clusters of vibrant yellow flowers at the apex. This hand-coloured engraving is a plate from Weinmann’s seminal work Phytanthoza Iconographia, published in Regensburg between 1737 and 1745. The publication is historically significant for being one of the first major botanical works to utilize a combination of mezzotint and hand-finishing to achieve a high degree of naturalism and depth.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanist based in Regensburg. He organized a vast botanical garden and commissioned several artists, including Georg Dionysius Ehret, to illustrate thousands of plant specimens for his multi-volume opus. Phytanthoza Iconographia stands as a masterpiece of eighteenth-century botanical literature, documenting both common and exotic flora with scientific and artistic precision. Weinmann’s work remains a primary reference for the study of early modern plant classification and the evolution of botanical illustration techniques.
