12618 François Halma (1653–1722) – Reconstruction of the Roman Circus and Circus Games - Copperplate engraving (Early 18th Century)
This large, double-folio copperplate engraving presents a detailed reconstruction of the interior of a Roman Circus, as conceived by the scholar Onofrio Panvinius. The illustration meticulously details the structure of the arena, including the tiered seating and entrances, and focuses on the central spina (spine) decorated with an obelisk and turning posts. The track is shown actively filled with the Ludi Circenses (Circus Games), specifically featuring chariots, horsemen, and various athletic contests.
The print was included in a major work of classical scholarship published by François Halma to visualize ancient Roman architecture and public spectacle.François Halma was a significant Dutch publisher and bookseller who operated during the late 17th and early 18th centuries in Utrecht and Leiden. Although primarily a publisher, he oversaw the production of numerous works of historical and biblical geography. His firm was known for producing large, detailed copperplate maps included in scholarly Bibles and comprehensive historical atlases.
