12615 Charles Nicolas Cochin the Younger (1715–1790) – The Tuna Hunt – Copperplate engraving
This expansive maritime engraving illustrates a traditional tuna hunt, known as a madrague, in the Gulf of Bandol. The composition features several large rowboats filled with numerous figures working together to draw in heavy fishing nets brimming with tuna. In the middle ground, a large three-masted sailing ship is anchored, while smaller vessels and sailboats navigate the surrounding waters. The background reveals a detailed coastline with rolling hills and a fortified town under a vast, cloud-filled sky. Below the image, a formal dedication to the King is inscribed in French, noting that the work is based on an original painting from the collection of the Marquis de Marigny, Director General of the King's Buildings. The piece is part of the celebrated Ports of France series.
Charles Nicolas Cochin the Younger was one of the most influential French artists, engravers, and art critics of the 18th century. Born into a family of talented engravers, he rose to become the secretary of the Académie Royale and a trusted advisor to Madame de Pompadour and King Louis XV. Cochin was a central figure in the transition from the Rococo style to Neoclassicism, and his technical mastery of the copperplate medium was unparalleled. His collaboration with Joseph Vernet on the Ports of France series produced some of the most iconic and detailed visual records of 18th-century French naval power and maritime life, securing his legacy as a primary chronicler of the Enlightenment era.
