This copperplate engraving presents a highly complex and chaotic depiction of the Crucifixion on Calvary, focusing on the pandemonium surrounding the event. Christ is elevated between the two thieves, while the scene below is filled with Roman soldiers, some on horseback, observers, and various military standards. The crowded composition includes numerous dynamic figures utilizing ladders near the crosses, emphasizing the immense historical gravity and chaos of the scene. Skulls and implements lie scattered in the immediate foreground, indicating the location of Golgotha.

The print was published by Philips Galle as part of a devotional series illustrating the Passion of Christ.Philips Galle was a highly influential Dutch engraver, printmaker, and publisher who worked during the latter half of the 16th century. He established a prolific print publishing house in Antwerp, which became renowned throughout Europe for its high-quality copperplate engravings, often based on designs by major Northern Mannerist artists.
