12581 Ludovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – True Delineation of the Temple of the Virgin
This engraving is a detailed architectural view of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, Belgium, identified by the Latin title True Delineation of the Temple of the Virgin Mary. The print shows the large Gothic structure in an oblique view, highlighting the immense height and intricate detail of the main tower, the nave, and the adjacent clerical buildings. A decorative cartouche, suspended by putti, displays the title. This plate is a key topographical illustration from an edition of Ludovico Guicciardini’s influential geographical description of the Low Countries.
Ludovico Guicciardini was an Italian merchant, diplomat, and historian from Florence who spent a significant part of his life in Antwerp. He is celebrated as the author of the Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi (Description of all the Low Countries), first published in 1567. This definitive work, which detailed the geography, cities, and culture of the region, was a perennial bestseller and was continuously reprinted throughout the 17th century with numerous engraved city views and plans, including this architectural depiction of Antwerp's most famous landmark.
