12578 Henry Shaw (1800–1873) – Masque of Charles VI of France (Bal des Arde) - lithograph

This hand-coloured print depicts the notorious "Bal des Ardents" (Ball of the Burning Men), a catastrophic masquerade that took place at the French court in Paris in 1393 during the reign of King Charles VI.
Henry Shaw was an English architectural draughtsman, engraver, and antiquary of the 19th century. He was born in London and elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1833. Shaw was highly skilled in various printmaking techniques, including engraving, etching, and wood engraving, which he used primarily to illustrate his own scholarly works on medieval and Renaissance decorative arts, architecture, and costume. His most famous publications include Details of Gothic Architecture and the seminal two-volume Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages, establishing him as a prominent figure in 19th-century antiquarian publishing.
