This highly detailed print is a monumental bird's-eye view of Rome, Italy, based on the work of the architect and engraver Giovanni Battista Falda.The map masterfully merges the city's ancient ruins and monuments with its contemporary Baroque streets, palaces, and churches. The composition is richly ornamented with intricate decorative elements, including a large allegorical vignette in the upper left showing Religion and Justice on a cloud throne, and in the lower right, a scene of historical figures consulting a map. The side panels feature extensive keys, legends, and dedications. This single-sheet version is a reduction of Falda's famous multi-sheet wall map of 1676, published in a Dutch atlas such as the Thesaurus Antiquitatum Romanarum by Halma and Van der Aa.
Giovanni Battista Falda was an Italian architect, draughtsman, and engraver of the Baroque period. He is celebrated for his meticulously detailed etchings and engravings of Rome's monuments, fountains, and architectural views. His works, particularly his city plans, are considered essential visual documentation of 17th-century Rome and were widely circulated throughout Europe, often being re-engraved and republished by Dutch firms.
