12542 Lodovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – View of the City of Brielle – Netherlands – Engraving (1625)

"Briel" This work provides a bird's-eye topographical view of the fortified city of Brielle, illustrating its strategic position within the maritime landscape of the Maas estuary and its complex system of medieval defensive walls. The engraving was published in Amsterdam by Johannes Janssonius as part of a later edition of the Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi. This plate is distinguished by its precise rendering of urban architecture, windmills, and various maritime vessels, capturing the city shortly after its pivotal role in the Eighty Years' War.
Lodovico Guicciardini was an Italian writer and merchant from a prominent Florentine family who spent much of his professional life in Antwerp. He became the primary chronicler of the economic, social, and physical geography of the Low Countries during the 16th century. His monumental chorographical study, first published in 1567, established a standard for urban portraiture and topographical description. His work provided a comprehensive survey of the Dutch and Flemish cities, contributing significantly to the European understanding of the region's prosperity and urban development.
