"Isles Philippines... Archipel des Philippines... Les Nouvelles Carolines" This work provides a detailed geographical study of the Philippine archipelago, including the major islands of Luzon and Mindanao, and extends eastward to illustrate the Caroline Islands and Palau in the Western Pacific. The engraving was published in Paris by Georges-Louis Le Rouge. This plate features coastal delineations and island groups that were of significant strategic and commercial interest to European powers during the mid-18th century as they expanded their trade routes in the East Indies.
Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a prolific French engineer and cartographer who served as a geographer to the French King. He was known for his diverse output, ranging from military plans and fortifications to decorative atlases and architectural studies. Le Rouge played a crucial role in introducing contemporary British and German cartographic data to the French market through his various publications. His works are noted for their technical detail and their documentation of the shifting colonial boundaries of the mid-18th century.
