"Carte de la Grece Thrace et Macedoine" This work provides a detailed historical reconstruction of the Aegean world during antiquity, identifying the classical regions of the Peloponnese, Attica, Macedonia, and Thrace using their original nomenclature. The engraving was published in Paris by J.B. Delaval as part of an educational atlas project overseen by Edme Mentelle. This plate is distinguished by its meticulous delineations of city-states, ancient colonies, and the complex topography of the Greek islands and the coast of Asia Minor.
Edme Mentelle was a prominent French geographer and historian who specialized in classical geography and chronological studies. His career spanned from the late Enlightenment through the Napoleonic era, during which he authored numerous influential works intended to integrate historical narrative with precise geographical mapping. He served as a professor at the Ecole Normale and was a member of the Institut de France. His maps were widely utilized for educational purposes, helping to standardize the visualization of ancient history for 19th-century scholars.
