"Traineau des Samoyedes. Chantier hors d'Archangel." The upper register illustrates a traditional Samoyed sledge pulled by two reindeer across a frozen landscape, with the driver holding a long guiding pole and a distant view of Arkhangelsk featuring church domes. The lower register depicts a busy shipyard outside the city of Arkhangelsk, showing numerous merchant vessels at anchor, small rowing boats in the foreground, and timber structures along the riverbank. This etching was published in Amsterdam as part of the travel account Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie, printed by Willem and David Goeree. The work provides a detailed visual record of the transportation methods and the maritime infrastructure of northern Russia during the early eighteenth century.

Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch artist and traveler who gained renown for his highly accurate visual records of the Near East and Russia. He was trained as a painter and used his skills to provide western audiences with detailed depictions of foreign architecture, customs, and natural history. His expeditions were characterized by a commitment to drawing from life, often correcting the inaccuracies of previous explorers.
