12499 Cornelis de Bruyn (1652–1726) – Panoramic View of the Harbor of Arkhangelsk in Russia - Etching (1711)

"ARCHANGEL." This panoramic etching provides a comprehensive maritime view of the Russian port city of Arkhangelsk on the White Sea. The composition features several large merchant vessels and smaller rowboats navigating the Northern Dvina River, with the city's low-lying skyline visible along the horizon. Notable architectural landmarks, including the prominent stone towers of the Gostiny Dvor (merchant yard) and church spires, characterize the urban backdrop. The work utilizes a wide horizontal format to capture the scale of Russia's primary international trading gateway of the early eighteenth century. This plate was published in Amsterdam as part of the travel account Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie.
Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch artist, traveler, and writer who achieved fame for his meticulously documented journeys through the Near East and Russia. Trained as a painter in the Dutch tradition, he placed a high priority on visual accuracy, often sketching landscapes and architectural sites from direct observation. His second major expedition took him through the Russian Empire during the reign of Peter the Great, where he was granted special permission to record views of cities and local customs. De Bruyn's published works were significant for providing Western European audiences with their first authentic and detailed visual accounts of Russian and Persian territories. His engravings remain essential primary sources for the study of early modern geography and ethnography.
