"Spondyle Spondylus." This eighteenth-century engraving provides a scientific illustration of distinct specimens of the Spondylus genus, showcasing the morphological diversity and irregular growth patterns characteristic of these thorny oysters. The work was published in Paris as part of the Encyclopedie Methodique, an ambitious 201-volume undertaking by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke.

Panckoucke was an enterprising publisher who established his career by collaborating on the Encyclopedie of Diderot and d'Alembert, a controversial and widely popular reference that became a definitive record of eighteenth-century European civilization.
