12475 Pietro Andrea Mattioli (1501–1577) – Botanical Study of Samphire (Fenouil Marin or Bacille) – Woodcut (1572)

"Bacille I. Bacille II." This woodcut illustrates two varieties of samphire, a maritime plant known for its salty flavor and medicinal properties. The left figure shows the plant with its characteristic fleshy leaves and flowering umbels, while the right figure depicts a more robust variant with a detailed root system. The French text describes the plant's habitat on rocky coastlines and promontories along the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas. Mattioli discusses the culinary preparation of the herb, noting it is eaten both raw and cooked, and details its pharmaceutical uses for aiding digestion and treating jaundice. This page is a leaf from the French edition of the commentaries on the medicinal works of Dioscorides, published by Gabriel Cotier in Lyon in 1572.
Pietro Andrea Mattioli was an Italian physician and naturalist who became a central figure in Renaissance botany. He is primarily known for his extensive commentaries on the work of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides. Mattioli expanded upon classical knowledge by identifying and describing numerous European plant species previously unknown to the scientific community. His publications were highly influential and served as the standard reference for medical and botanical studies across Europe for nearly two centuries.
