"Corne de Cerf. Serpentine." This woodcut presents a side-by-side botanical comparison of buckshorn plantain and serpentine. The illustration on the left focuses on the branched, antler-like foliage of the plantain, while the right depicts the upright flowering spikes and root structure of the serpentine variety. The French text contains a dense scholarly commentary comparing these plants to descriptions found in classical works by Pliny and Theophrastus. The author discusses the plants' medicinal properties, specifically their effectiveness in treating venomous bites and their use in cooling the stomach. This page is a leaf from the French edition of the commentaries on the medicinal works of Dioscorides, published by Gabriel Cotier in Lyon in 1572.

Pietro Andrea Mattioli was an Italian physician and naturalist who became a central figure in Renaissance botany. He is primarily known for his extensive commentaries on the work of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides. Mattioli expanded upon classical knowledge by identifying and describing numerous European plant species previously unknown to the scientific community. His publications were highly influential and served as the standard reference for medical and botanical studies across Europe for nearly two centuries.
