"Corne de Cerf. Serpentine." This woodcut presents a side-by-side botanical comparison of buckshorn plantain and serpentine. Pietro Andrea Mattioli was an Italian physician and naturalist who became a central figure in Renaissance botany. He is primarily known for his extensive commentaries on the work of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides. Mattioli expanded upon classical knowledge by identifying and describing numerous European plant species previously unknown to the scientific community. His publications were highly influential and served as the standard reference for medical and botanical studies across Europe for nearly two centuries.
