12473 Pietro Andrea Mattioli (1501–1577) – Botanical Study of Sow Thistle (Laicteron) – Woodcut (1572)

"Laicteron Piqvant. Laicteron Non Piqvant." This woodcut features three detailed botanical illustrations of sow thistle species. The top left depicts the prickly variety, the top right shows a smooth variety, and the bottom section illustrates an additional non-prickly variant. The French text provides a detailed examination of the plants' physical forms, noting their milky sap and yellow flowers. The commentary discusses the medicinal applications of the leaves and roots, specifically their use in treating stomach inflammation and their benefits for nursing mothers. This page is a leaf from the French edition of the commentaries on the medicinal works of Dioscorides, published by Gabriel Cotier in Lyon in 1572.
Pietro Andrea Mattioli was an Italian physician and naturalist who became a central figure in Renaissance botany. He is primarily known for his extensive commentaries on the work of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides. Mattioli expanded upon classical knowledge by identifying and describing numerous European plant species previously unknown to the scientific community. His publications were highly influential and served as the standard reference for medical and botanical studies across Europe for nearly two centuries.
