"Gingidium. Cerfeuil. Visnaga." This woodcut illustrates three aromatic and medicinal plants from the umbellifer family. The top left section depicts gingidium, the top right shows chervil, and the bottom section features visnaga. The accompanying French text describes the physical characteristics of these plants and their specific medicinal uses for the stomach and bladder. This page is a leaf from the French translation of the commentaries on the medicinal works of Dioscorides, published by Gabriel Cotier in Lyon in 1572.
Pietro Andrea Mattioli was an Italian physician and naturalist who became a central figure in Renaissance botany. He is primarily known for his extensive commentaries on the work of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides. Mattioli expanded upon classical knowledge by identifying and describing numerous European plant species previously unknown to the scientific community. His publications were highly influential and served as the standard reference for medical and botanical studies across Europe for nearly two centuries.
