12458 Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) – Hydrogeological Model of a Subterranean Reservoir – Engraving (1665)

"Liber Quintus, Sect. IV". This scientific engraving serves as a technical illustration for Kircher's theories on the origins of thermal baths and mountain springs. The central figure depicts a cross-section of a mountainous landscape containing a large subterranean reservoir or "caverna." The diagram illustrates how meltwater from snow-capped peaks and rainfall percolates through geological fissures to fill internal chambers. Kircher uses a system of lettered labels to demonstrate the flow of water into a lower basin, which he suggests is heated by subterranean fires to produce hot springs. The Latin text discusses the seasonal fluctuations of these water systems and references specific geographical locations in Hungary and the Alps. This work was published in Amsterdam as part of the treatise Mundus Subterraneus.
Athanasius Kircher was a German Jesuit scholar and one of the most versatile scientific minds of the Baroque era. Often referred to as a master of a hundred arts, he published extensive works on subjects ranging from oriental studies and medicine to geology and music theory. His Mundus Subterraneus was a pioneering effort in the field of geophysics, combining empirical observation with theological and philosophical speculation. Kircher’s work was instrumental in disseminating the idea of an interconnected subterranean world, influenced by his personal observations of volcanic activity and sea currents.
