12452 Rigobert Bonne (1727–1794) – Map of North America – North America – Engraving (1780)
"Amerique Septentrionale". This geographical map provides an overview of the North American continent as it was understood during the late eighteenth century. The engraving delineates the colonial territories of Britain, France, and Spain, including Canada, Louisiana, the nascent United States, and Mexico. Significant features include the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River system, and the vast unexplored regions of the Pacific Northwest and the Arctic. The composition features a title block in the lower left and an extensive array of scale bars in the upper right. This work was published in Paris as part of the Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre by the publisher Jean-Leonard Pellet in 1780.
Rigobert Bonne was a French cartographer and mathematician who held the prestigious position of Royal Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine. He was responsible for producing highly accurate maritime charts and terrestrial maps that served both scientific and military purposes. Bonne is recognized for his significant contributions to the encyclopedic projects of the Enlightenment, including his collaboration with Guillaume Raynal. His maps are characterized by a refined aesthetic and a commitment to updated geographical data, influencing European cartography for several decades.
