12450 Rigobert Bonne (1727–1794) – Map of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Margraviate of Lusatia – Czech Republic – Engraving (1780)
"Royaume de Boheme et Marquisat de Lusace". This geographical map presents the territories of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Margraviate of Lusatia, bordering Saxony, Silesia, Moravia, and Austria. The engraving illustrates the mountainous terrain surrounding the Bohemian basin, including the Sudetes and Ore Mountains, and details the extensive network of the Elbe and Vltava river systems. Significant urban centers such as Prague and Budweis are identified alongside numerous smaller towns and regional boundaries. The composition includes a title block identifying the author as the Hydrographic Engineer of the Navy and features several scale bars in the lower right corner. This work was published in Paris as part of the Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre by the publisher Jean-Leonard Pellet in 1780.
Rigobert Bonne was a French cartographer and mathematician who held the prestigious position of Royal Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine. He was responsible for producing highly accurate maritime charts and terrestrial maps that served both scientific and military purposes. Bonne is recognized for his significant contributions to the encyclopedic projects of the Enlightenment, including his collaboration with Guillaume Raynal. His maps are characterized by a refined aesthetic and a commitment to updated geographical data, influencing European cartography for several decades.
