12449 Rigobert Bonne (1727–1794) – Map of the Circle of Austria – Austria – Engraving (1780)
"Cercle d'Autriche". This geographical map details the administrative and territorial divisions of the Austrian Circle within the Holy Roman Empire. The engraving illustrates the Alpine topography, the course of the Danube River, and the various duchies and counties including Tyrol, Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola. Significant urban centers such as Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck are identified, along with the coastal regions bordering the Gulf of Venice. The composition includes a title block specifying the author as the Hydrographic Engineer of the Navy and features multiple scale bars in the lower right. This work was published in Paris as part of the Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre by the publisher Jean-Leonard Pellet in 1780.
Rigobert Bonne was a French cartographer and mathematician who held the prestigious position of Royal Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine. He was responsible for producing highly accurate maritime charts and terrestrial maps that served both scientific and military purposes. Bonne is recognized for his significant contributions to the encyclopedic projects of the Enlightenment, including his collaboration with Guillaume Raynal. His maps are characterized by a refined aesthetic and a commitment to updated geographical data, influencing European cartography for several decades.
