"Zebra Indica, Indianisch Maulthier". This zoological plate illustrates three equine specimens with varying coat patterns and physical characteristics. The top figure depicts a zebra, labeled as an "Indian mule," showing the characteristic bold striping across the body and legs. The middle figure, identified as "Equus Indicus," shows a horse-like creature with more subtle, wavy stripes and a flowing mane and tail. The bottom figure depicts "Equus Hirsutus" (Rough Horse), a sturdy equine with a thick, textured coat and heavy mane, shown in a naturalistic landscape. These illustrations represent the 17th-century effort to document exotic species brought to Europe or described by travelers. The plate was published in Frankfurt as part of the series Historiae Naturalis de Quadrupedibus Libri.

Johannes Jonstonus was a Polish-born physician and naturalist of Scottish descent who became one of the most widely read scientific authors of the seventeenth century. His most significant contribution was the Historiae Naturalis, a massive multivolume compendium that synthesized the zoological knowledge of his time, drawing from both classical sources and contemporary observations. Jonstonus collaborated with the renowned Merian family of engravers, particularly Matthäus Merian the Younger, to produce high-quality illustrations that set a new standard for natural history publishing. His work remained the primary reference for European zoology until the more systematic classifications of Linnaeus in the eighteenth century.
