12430 Felix Delamarche (active 1820–1850) – Map of Europe Divided into its Different States Under Charlemagne – Europe – Hand-coloured engraving (1827)
"L'Europe divisée en ses différens États sous Charlemagne". This historical map reconstructs the political geography of Europe during the reign of Charlemagne in the late eighth and early ninth centuries. The engraving illustrates the vast extent of the Carolingian Empire, stretching from the Atlantic coast to Central Europe, as well as contemporary entities such as the Byzantine Empire, the Caliphate of Cordoba, and various Slavic and Scandinavian territories. Original hand-colouring is used to differentiate the major imperial boundaries and tributary regions. Published in Paris by Felix Delamarche in 1827, this work was designed for a historical atlas to provide students and scholars with a visual understanding of the foundations of medieval Europe.
Felix Delamarche was a French geographer and cartographer active during the first half of the nineteenth century. He was the son and successor of Charles-François Delamarche, one of the most influential French map publishers of the late eighteenth century. Felix continued the family tradition of producing high-quality globes, maps, and atlases that were widely used for both academic and general reference. His work is characterized by a commitment to updating geographical data while maintaining the elegant engraving style established by his father. The Delamarche firm remained a dominant force in the Parisian cartographic market for several decades, contributing significantly to the dissemination of geographical knowledge in post-Napoleonic Europe.
