12414 Robert Benard (1734–1777) – Marine Fishing: Wood and Net Enclosures, Stone Weirs, and Mussel Stakes – Engraving (c. 1770–1780)

"Pêches de Mer, Parcs de bois et Filets, Parcs de Pierres, Buchot". This large-format engraving is divided into three vertical panels, each illustrating a different method of coastal aquaculture and stationary fishing. The left panel shows elaborate wood and net enclosures (parcs de bois et filets) designed to trap fish as the tide recedes. The central panel depicts stone weirs (parcs de pierres) built along the shoreline for a similar purpose. The right panel illustrates the "bouchot" system, which uses rows of wooden stakes driven into the seabed for the cultivation of mussels. These scenes provide a detailed record of the structural engineering used in 18th-century French maritime industries.
This work was sourced from the Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. Published in Paris, this monumental Enlightenment project sought to document the "mechanical arts" with scientific rigor. Robert Benard, as the director of the engraving department, was responsible for the technical accuracy of these plates. His methodical linear style was specifically developed to capture the complex textures of nets, stonework, and wooden structures, making these illustrations essential primary sources for the history of technology and coastal life.
Robert Benard was a French engraver who specialized in technical and scientific illustration during the eighteenth century. He served as the primary engraver for the Académie Royale des Sciences and the director of the engraving department for Diderot's Encyclopédie. His body of work is characterized by a precise and methodical linear style that was ideally suited for documenting complex mechanical trades and natural history specimens. Benard is credited with overseeing the production of over two thousand plates that contributed to the global dissemination of French Enlightenment knowledge.
