12413 Robert Benard (1734–1777) – Marine Fishing: Traps and Coastal Bird Hunting – Engraving (c. 1770–1780)

"Pêches de Mer, Trameau, Pêches des Oiseaux Aquatiques, Flue; Courtine ou Rets à Macreuse, Pêches des Oiseaux, la nuit à la Barette". This large-format engraving is divided into three vertical registers, each illustrating specialized maritime harvesting techniques used along the French coast. The left and central panels depict the arrangement of large-scale nets and traps designed for both fish and aquatic birds (specifically scoters or macreuses) near rocky cliffs. The right panel illustrates a nocturnal bird hunting scene (la nuit à la Barette), where hunters utilize lanterns and hand nets to capture waterfowl on the shore.
This work was sourced from the Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, the landmark Enlightenment project edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. Robert Benard directed the engraving of the plates for this series, documenting the intersection of natural history and industrial labor. His methodical linear style provides a clear and scientifically accurate record of pre-modern coastal economies and the complex tools developed by local mariners.
Robert Benard was a French engraver who specialized in technical and scientific illustration during the eighteenth century. He served as the primary engraver for the Académie Royale des Sciences and the director of the engraving department for Diderot's Encyclopédie. His body of work is characterized by a precise and methodical linear style that was ideally suited for documenting complex mechanical trades and natural history specimens.
