12388 Leonhard Christoph Sturm (1669–1719) – Architectural Study of the Composite Order Entablature and Capital – Engraving (c. 1714–1721)

"Obertheil der Römischen Ordnung". This technical architectural engraving provides a meticulous study of the upper portion of the Roman Composite order, showcasing a richly decorated capital adorned with acanthus leaves, volutes, and floral swags. The plate includes a detailed elevation of the entablature with its cornice, frieze, and architrave, accompanied by precise modular measurements and proportional scales. To the left, a plan view of the capital's abacus and volute arrangement is provided, demonstrating the geometric complexity of the design. This work was published as Tab. 31 in Sturm’s influential "Prodromus Architecturae Goldmannianae," issued in Augsburg by Jeremias Wolff between 1714 and 1721.
Leonhard Christoph Sturm was a prominent German master builder and architectural theorist who dedicated much of his career to expanding and publishing the work of Nicolaus Goldmann. He served as a professor of mathematics and architecture in Wolfenbüttel and Frankfurt an der Oder before becoming the director of buildings for the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Sturm was instrumental in disseminating the classical orders and Protestant church designs throughout Northern Europe during the early eighteenth century. His publications are regarded as essential records of the transition from late Baroque to early Neoclassical architectural principles.
