12314 Mattheus Smallegange (1624–1710) – Views of Zierikzee and Veere – Engraving (1696)

"Lants Aenkomst te Ziericzee, Gast-huys tot Vere" depicts various urban and architectural views in the province of Zeeland. The engraving displays four separate scenes including the arrival at Zierikzee, harbor views, and the almshouse and towers in Veere. This work originates from the Nieuwe Chronyk van Zeeland, published in Middelburg in 1696. The plate captures the topographical and structural features of these Dutch port cities during the late seventeenth century.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian and genealogist. He is best known for his comprehensive chronicles of the province of Zeeland. His work included detailed descriptions and visual records of the region's topography and urban development. He significantly contributed to the historiography of the Netherlands through his cartographic and narrative documentation.
